Why E-Commerce

Management

In 2002, GoldQuest International was doing a booming trade on the Internet, however they are also faced a major problem by the increments. The IT platform supporting its e-commerce portal has reached its limit. The previous Windows 2000 system was stretched in terms of the transactions it could handle and the level of customer service it could provide.

The problem was compounded by the complexity of the transactions

GoldQuest has to handle—there were cultural, language and jurisdiction issues, plus the sales, payment and shipping cycles the company has to deal with.

Initially they have been a Microsoft shop from the very first start. They launched their initial database application working from a laptop running Microsoft Access. They had been using applet server pages and programming the back-end on Visual Basic

6.0.

About a year ago, the company did a complete re-write of their e-commerce site and upgraded it into a .Net application platform.

GoldQuest also bought Internet Information Services 6.0 for its enhanced security features, Visual Studio .Net for developing its e-commerce applications, and SQL2000 as its database. It invested a total of HK$100,000 (US$12,822) in the system upgrade.

Microsoft .NET Architecture Based on Windows Server 2003

Adapting to change has always been important to business success. Today, however, change seems more rapid than ever. Companies merge, markets shift, competitors develop new products, and customers demand change, all with unprecedented speed. In today's business environment, staying ahead means continuously adapting to change—and making change work in your favor. To do that, business leaders need IT systems that support and enable their strategic decisions.

Today, more than 70 percent of their transactions are completed over the Internet, and GoldQuest expects turnover of $250 million (U.S.) this year.

GoldQuest's challenge was to strengthen its leadership position by continuing to make the best use of technology advances. To do so, it has standardized on Microsoft .NET as its development platform and systems architecture.

Solution

To host its mission-critical e-commerce operations, GoldQuest has deployed Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS) 6.0 on a Microsoft Windows Server™ 2003 Enterprise Edition platform. GoldQuest's eStore handles between 3,000 and 10,000 transactions per week, with an average of 200 customers concurrently using the e-commerce facilities.

Benefits

With IIS 6.0 on Windows Server 2003, GoldQuest has improved productivity, customer service, and return on investment. Richard E. Zinkiewicz, Director of Finance and Chief Reputation Officer of GoldQuest International Limited, cites three main benefits of the .NET infrastructure:

It is a good fit with GoldQuest's .NET application environment. It offers enhanced system security and stability.

Ease of administration.

At the heart of Microsoft Visual Studio® .NET is the new and improved Microsoft .NET Framework, which provides improved scalability, security, and performance for rapidly building and integrating Web services and applications.

Combining the robust platform of Windows Server 2003 and the productivity in developing applications using Visual Studio .NET, the in-house development team of GoldQuest was able to complete the build-out of the eStore portal in less than three months. It also had experience using Web services for the GoldQuest payment credit card gateway.
